Worland, WY – A sharp fall chill is on the way for northern Wyoming, where a Freeze Watch has been issued from late Sunday night through Monday morning. Subfreezing temperatures could settle into the Bighorn Basin and Johnson County valleys before sunrise Monday, threatening late-season gardens and outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, the watch includes Lovell, Greybull, Worland, Buffalo, Basin, Ten Sleep, Powell, and Shell, where overnight lows may reach 27°F in the coldest pockets. Clear skies and calm winds will allow rapid cooling after sunset Sunday, with frost and freeze conditions developing quickly after midnight.

Residents are urged to protect vulnerable vegetation and irrigation systems. The Wyoming Department of Agriculture recommends covering tender plants and draining or insulating exposed water lines. Pet owners should bring animals indoors or provide adequate shelter from the cold.

This will likely mark the first widespread freeze of the fall season for much of north-central Wyoming. After the cold start Monday, sunshine and lighter winds will return by afternoon, with highs rebounding into the upper 50s to near 60.

A gradual warming trend is expected midweek under high pressure, though another cold front may brush the region late next week, keeping overnight frost concerns alive across the basin valleys.
