Cheyenne, WY – A fresh blast of winter weather is set to impact southeastern Wyoming’s Sierra Madre Range, with snow totals reaching up to 8 inches through Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until noon MDT Saturday. Snow accumulation will be heaviest above 9,000 feet, where totals could surpass 6 inches.
The advisory warns that outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, hikers and snowmobilers, could face dangerous conditions due to falling and blowing snow, leading to low visibility and the potential for disorientation. Travel in the area may become very difficult overnight and into Saturday morning, particularly on backcountry routes and unpaved roads.
Those venturing into the Sierra Madre Range are urged to prepare for winter conditions, dress in layers, and carry navigation tools. Authorities recommend delaying travel if possible and checking Wyoming 511 for the latest road conditions.
While snow in the high terrain isn’t unusual for late March, this system is expected to significantly impact recreation and backcountry travel due to rapid accumulation and blowing snow.
Snowfall is expected to taper off by midday Saturday as the system weakens and moves eastward.
