RIVERTON, Wyo. – Thunderstorms could rattle parts of central Wyoming Tuesday afternoon, raising fire danger and travel concerns across Fremont County. Stronger cells may develop near Sweetwater County, with gusty winds up to 20 mph creating difficult conditions on Highway 26.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, isolated thunderstorms are likely between noon and 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 9. While rainfall may stay light, lightning and sudden wind gusts could make driving hazardous. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning, as elevated fire weather conditions will continue through midweek.

Tuesday night may bring lingering showers, with lows around 50 degrees. By Wednesday, Riverton will see a high near 87 under partly sunny skies, but gusts could reach 25 mph. That unsettled pattern will hold through Thursday, with scattered storms possible each evening.

Friday marks the next significant shift. Forecasters expect widespread showers and possible thunderstorms, bringing much-needed rainfall but also slowing weekend travel across I-80 and local highways. Cooler temperatures will settle in, with highs near 74 by Friday and mid-70s through Sunday.

Drivers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, especially during afternoon commutes. Keeping vehicles fueled, devices charged, and travel flexible will be key as Wyoming heads into a wetter, stormier stretch of September weather.

Warnings may be issued if storms intensify, and updates are expected daily through the weekend.
