RIVERTON, Wyo. – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Wind River Mountains as a strong early-season system drops heavy snow across central Wyoming through Thursday night. Accumulations could reach 11 inches in higher elevations, creating slick and hazardous travel over mountain passes.

According to the National Weather Service office in Riverton, snow will intensify after 6 p.m. Wednesday and continue until 11 p.m. Thursday. The heaviest bands are expected between 7,500 and 9,000 feet, with difficult travel expected on South Pass, Togwotee Pass, and other high routes.

Forecasters warn the wintry conditions will also impact hunters and those venturing into backcountry areas. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution, particularly during overnight and early morning hours when roads may refreeze.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation recommends checking wyoroad.info for updated road and closure information.

Winter weather alerts remain active through late Thursday, with additional advisories possible if snow lingers into Friday.
