Riverton, Wyo. – Thunderstorms with gusty winds and hail could disrupt travel across central Wyoming Friday, with the National Weather Service warning of severe storm potential through late evening. Drivers on highways near Riverton, Casper and Cody may face reduced visibility from heavy rain and blowing dust.

According to the National Weather Service office in Riverton, storms are expected to develop Friday afternoon and persist into the evening, bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph and isolated large hail. The strongest activity will target central portions of the state, including Fremont and Natrona counties.

Earlier air quality alerts tied to wildfire smoke from the Red Canyon Fire are set to expire by Thursday evening, but health officials continue to urge sensitive groups to limit outdoor exertion when smoke lingers.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, allow extra travel time during downpours, and keep weather alerts enabled on mobile devices. Storm chances remain in place across central and western Wyoming through Thursday.
