Casper, Wyo. – Strong storms are pushing across central and northern Wyoming Tuesday afternoon, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for more than eight counties—including Casper, Sheridan, Cody, and Thermopolis—until 9 p.m. MDT. Gusty winds, large hail, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning could hit at any time, threatening travel, outdoor plans, and utilities.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers Big Horn, Fremont, Hot Springs, Johnson, Natrona, Park, Sheridan, and Washakie counties. Officials warn of wind gusts topping 60 mph and hail possibly exceeding one inch in diameter. State highways like US-20, US-26, and I-25 could see rapid weather changes and slick pavement, especially north of Casper and west toward Cody.
Residents are urged to secure loose items, avoid non-essential travel, and keep phones charged in case of outages. Outdoor activities—including at local parks and along the Bighorn Mountains—should be delayed until storms pass. This round of storms follows a wetter-than-usual July for the region, increasing flash flood risks in low-lying areas.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m., with further warnings or advisories possible if storms intensify. Stay tuned to local media and weather apps for the latest updates.
