RIVERTON, Wyo. – Strong winds and scattered thunderstorms threaten central Wyoming Friday, bringing elevated fire danger and travel hazards on key roadways. Gusts could reach 50 mph, raising concerns for drivers along U.S. Highway 26 and surrounding routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, widespread elevated fire weather conditions will continue Friday afternoon with scattered thunderstorms possible across Fremont County. The primary threats include dangerous wind gusts and dry lightning that may spark new wildfires.

Travelers should plan for sudden changes on open highways, especially U.S. 26 near Riverton and I-25 to the east. Blowing dust may reduce visibility, while dry fuels heighten wildfire risk. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and prepare for rapid weather shifts.

Saturday will bring another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly over western and northern Wyoming. Though rain chances increase, strong winds remain a primary hazard. By Sunday, conditions improve with mostly sunny skies returning across central Wyoming.

Early next week, Riverton sees cooler weather with highs in the upper 70s and additional storm chances Monday through Wednesday.

Warnings remain in effect, and more advisories could follow if storm activity increases. Stay weather-aware and check road conditions before traveling.
