RIVERTON, Wyo. – Western and Central Wyoming are facing a turbulent weekend as a strong system brings a mix of rain, snow, and gusty winds to the region. Drivers heading into mountain passes such as the Bighorns, Absarokas, and Wind River Range could encounter several inches of snow and slick roads by Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through Sunday, warning of hazardous conditions for mountain travelers. Rain will dominate lower elevations from Riverton to Casper, while temperatures drop sharply Saturday night, leading to possible sub-freezing lows in some basins.
Periods of heavy precipitation may cause reduced visibility and slushy conditions on U.S. 26 and WY-28, especially above 7,000 feet. Winds could gust over 25 mph in open areas, further complicating travel. Residents are urged to delay mountain trips, check road cameras before departing, and prepare for rapid temperature drops Sunday night.
Conditions should improve by Monday as skies clear and highs rebound into the 50s. However, forecasters say another round of unsettled weather could return midweek.
