LARAMIE, Wyo. – Residents across south-central Wyoming will wake up to the season’s first freeze Wednesday, as temperatures are expected to plunge into the low 30s before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday for the Laramie Valley, Shirley Basin, and parts of Carbon County, including Rawlins, Saratoga, Encampment, Medicine Bow, and Baggs. Overnight lows could dip near 30 degrees, with widespread frost forming by daybreak.

The cold snap may damage unprotected gardens, crops, and outdoor plumbing. Officials urge residents to cover tender vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and wrap exposed pipes to prevent costly damage. Farmers and ranchers should also prepare livestock for the sudden chill.

The warning signals a seasonal shift for Wyoming, where cold air from the high plains often settles into valleys this time of year. Conditions are expected to warm slightly during the day, but additional overnight freezes remain possible later this week.
