RIVERTON, Wyo. – A sharp October cold front is racing across Wyoming this weekend, promising a blustery Saturday, scattered rain and mountain snow, and a rapid temperature drop heading into Columbus Day. Strong winds and the season’s first widespread freeze warning could bring a taste of early winter to much of western and central Wyoming.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a Freeze Watch takes effect late Sunday night through Monday morning for areas including Riverton, Jackson, Cody, and Casper. Temperatures could fall into the teens and low 20s, ending the growing season and threatening unprotected pipes and plants. Motorists along I-80, U.S. 26, and U.S. 191 should prepare for slushy stretches in mountain passes and gusts topping 50 mph.
Saturday brings breezy, mild conditions with scattered showers before clearing later in the day. As tropical moisture fades, much cooler air filters in behind the front. Light snow could linger Sunday morning across Yellowstone, the Tetons, and higher terrain near Pinedale. Winds will increase again by evening, ushering in sharply colder air.
By Columbus Day, sunshine returns but highs stay in the upper 50s — nearly 20 degrees cooler than Saturday’s peak. Western valleys may dip below freezing before dawn Tuesday. Residents are urged to protect outdoor faucets, bring pets inside, and cover sensitive vegetation.
Warmer afternoons slowly rebound midweek, but another storm system may arrive by late week, signaling a brisk, unsettled close to October’s second full week.
