Wyoming Weather Alert: 80 MPH Winds to Slam I-80 Summit and I-25 Through 9 PM Wednesday

Cheyenne, Wyoming – Truckers and high-profile vehicles face dangerous crosswinds along Interstate 80 and Interstate 25 as wind gusts up to 80 mph continue across southeast and central Wyoming through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne and Riverton, multiple High Wind Warnings remain in effect statewide. The South Laramie Range and Foothills, including the I-80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie, could see west winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts reaching 80 mph through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Similar gusts are expected near Bordeaux along I-25 between Chugwater and Wheatland.

In the Laramie Valley and Central Laramie County, including Cheyenne, gusts up to 70 mph will persist through 9 p.m. Wednesday. Arlington and Elk Mountain along I-80 in the North Snowy Range Foothills may see gusts to 75 mph, a frequent blowover zone for semis.

Farther west, warnings expand Wednesday morning from 5 a.m. through 5 p.m. or 8 p.m. for Casper, Riverton, Rock Springs and Green River. Gusts between 60 and 70 mph are expected along Highway 287 near Jeffrey City and Muddy Gap, and along I-80 from Rock Springs to Point of Rocks.

Lightweight trailers, campers and tractor-trailers face the highest risk. Drivers should delay travel during peak wind hours, keep both hands on the wheel and monitor WYDOT for possible restrictions. Warnings remain in effect into Wednesday night, and additional advisories could follow if winds persist.
