Riverton, Wyoming – Drivers crossing South Pass in western Wyoming face powerful wind gusts capable of pushing vehicles across lanes Monday afternoon, with bursts reaching 75 mph along exposed stretches of Highway 28.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a High Wind Warning remains active until 9 p.m. MDT Monday for the Wind River Mountains East, including Red Canyon and South Pass. Sustained southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, with stronger gusts funneling through mountain gaps and ridges.
The strongest winds are likely along Highway 28 near South Pass, where open terrain allows gusts to accelerate across the roadway. High-profile vehicles such as semitrailers, campers, and box trucks face the greatest risk of instability. Sudden crosswinds could also reduce driver control near Red Canyon and other elevated stretches of the route.
Travelers heading between Riverton, Lander, and Farson should prepare for abrupt gusts, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours. Drivers are urged to keep both hands on the wheel, slow speeds, and delay travel if operating large vehicles or towing trailers.
Winds are expected to gradually ease later tonight, but the warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Monday, and additional advisories could follow if mountain winds persist across central Wyoming.
