Rawlins, Wyoming – Crosswinds strong enough to tip lightweight trailers could hit Interstate 80 before daybreak Tuesday, creating hazardous travel across southeast Wyoming through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a High Wind Watch remains in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday evening for much of Carbon County, including Arlington, Elk Mountain, Rawlins and Saratoga. Southwest winds are expected to strengthen to 30 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph possible. In the Laramie Valley, Converse County and along Interstate 25 near Bordeaux, gusts could reach 70 mph through Tuesday afternoon.

The most dangerous stretch includes Interstate 80 near Arlington and Elk Mountain, where strong crosswinds frequently shut down light, high-profile vehicles. The Bordeaux area along I-25 between Chugwater and Wheatland is also prone to sudden gusts that can overturn campers and tractor trailers. Communities including Douglas, Wheatland, Laramie, Shirley Basin and the Upper North Platte River Basin could see sustained winds above 40 mph.

Drivers hauling trailers should consider delaying travel. Secure outdoor items, including livestock equipment and loose fencing. Power interruptions are possible if gusts approach 70 mph.

The watch signals conditions are favorable for a high wind event. Warnings may follow as confidence increases. Residents should monitor updates through Tuesday evening as stronger gusts develop.
