Riverton, Wyoming – Heavy mountain snowfall is expected across parts of northwest Wyoming beginning late Sunday afternoon, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect through Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Yellowstone National Park and the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains from 5 p.m. Sunday until 5 p.m. MST Monday. Snowfall totals of 7 to 12 inches are forecast across much of Yellowstone National Park, including the south and east entrances. Isolated higher totals up to 15 inches are possible at the highest elevations.

In the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts reaching up to 18 inches across the highest terrain of the Tetons. Accumulations of 1 to 5 inches are forecast near Mammoth in Yellowstone.

According to the weather service, the heaviest snowfall is expected between 11 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday. Snowfall rates may reach up to 1 inch per hour at times, especially overnight and during the Monday morning hours.

Winds will add to the impacts, with gusts of 25 to 35 mph expected across Yellowstone. In the Tetons, widespread gusts of 20 to 35 mph are forecast, with gusts up to 40 mph at higher elevations, potentially causing blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Travel could become difficult to very difficult, particularly across mountain passes and park roadways. Impacts are expected along WY-22 over Teton Pass, Togwotee Pass, and roads leading into Yellowstone National Park. Hazardous conditions may affect both the Monday morning and evening travel periods.
