Cheyenne, Wyoming – Drivers crossing the Interstate 80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie could face slick roads and blowing snow beginning late Thursday as a developing winter system targets the South Laramie Range.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Thursday evening through Friday evening for the South Laramie Range and nearby foothills. The system may produce 3 to 6 inches of snowfall with wind gusts reaching 40 mph, conditions that can quickly reduce visibility along exposed stretches of I-80.

Higher elevations near Vedauwoo, Buford, Pumpkin Vine, Whitaker, Federal, and Horse Creek are most likely to see accumulating snow first Thursday night. Gusty winds could blow snow across the highway corridor, especially near the I-80 Summit, creating slick pavement and drifting snow on bridges and overpasses.

Travel across southeast Wyoming’s busiest east-west freight corridor may slow significantly during the overnight hours and through Friday. Wyoming Department of Transportation crews typically monitor the summit closely during storms due to rapid icing and reduced visibility.

Drivers should prepare for winter travel conditions by allowing extra stopping distance, checking road conditions before departing, and carrying emergency supplies in case of delays.

Forecasters expect the system to impact the region through Friday evening, and additional advisories or upgraded warnings may be issued as snowfall totals become clearer.
