Riverton, WY – Gusty winds whip across the open plains of central Wyoming this morning, stirring dust and rattling fences as a strong system pushes east. After a turbulent start to the day, calmer conditions will gradually return by afternoon — but cooler air and a round of light mountain snow are right behind it.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a High Wind Warning remains in effect through early morning for areas stretching from Rock Springs through Casper. Gusts between 45 and 55 mph could make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially along I-25 and U.S. 20/26 near open terrain. Winds will diminish later in the day as a cooler air mass settles in across the state.
By late Friday, moisture behind the departing front will bring a chance of light snow to the Bighorn and Wind River Mountains, continuing into early Saturday. Valley areas such as Riverton and Lander will stay mostly dry but cooler, with highs near the low 50s by Saturday and clear, crisp nights dipping to the 20s.
Heading into early next week, models hint at another chance for rain and snow Tuesday into Wednesday — the next sign that winter weather is gearing up across the Rockies. For now, travel conditions remain favorable across most of Fremont County, but strong crosswinds may still linger on east–west routes this morning.
