Cheyenne, Wyoming – Travel across the Snowy Range is becoming dangerous early Tuesday as heavy snow and 65 mph wind gusts build toward whiteout conditions that could strand drivers and outdoor recreationists.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Snowy Range from 5 a.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Thursday. Snow totals between 12 and 18 inches are expected near Centennial and Albany, with powerful winds producing blowing and drifting snow.
In the North Snowy Range Foothills, including Arlington and Elk Mountain along Interstate 80, 2 to 4 inches of snow combined with 65 mph gusts will continue through 11 p.m. Tuesday. Blowing snow may drop visibility below one mile with rapidly changing conditions on I-80.
High winds and heavy snowfall could disorient hikers and snowmobilers in backcountry areas. Frostbite and hypothermia may develop quickly in exposed conditions.
Drivers should delay non-essential travel, carry winter survival kits and check Wyoming 511 for road closures. The most severe conditions will persist through Wednesday before tapering early Thursday morning.
