Laramie, Wyoming – Up to 10 inches of snow is piling up in the high country overnight, threatening to shut down stretches of Interstate 80 at the Summit and create whiteout conditions before the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for the Sierra Madre Range, Snowy Range, North Laramie Range and the South Laramie Range, including the I-80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie. Snow totals between 6 and 10 inches are expected in the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range, with 3 to 6 inches along Arlington, Elk Mountain and Vedauwoo. The North Laramie Range could see up to 6 additional inches.
Blowing snow may reduce visibility sharply along I-80 near Arlington and Elk Mountain, where crosswinds frequently create drifting. Bridges and overpasses will ice over quickly as temperatures remain below freezing.
Hunters, snowmobilers and backcountry hikers in the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges face dangerous conditions, including low visibility and rapidly changing weather. Travelers should check Wyoming 511 for real-time road closures and chain restrictions before heading out.
Snow continues through the day Tuesday, and additional travel advisories remain possible if bands intensify over the higher peaks.
