Riverton, Wyo. – Much of western and central Wyoming will face poor air quality and the threat of late-day thunderstorms through the weekend, with conditions expected to shift again by midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 1 p.m. Sunday for areas west of the Divide, including Riverton, Jackson, Rock Springs, and Green River. Smoke from wildfires in Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia continues to drift into the region. The Wyoming Department of Health advises residents, particularly young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, to avoid prolonged outdoor activity.
Scattered thunderstorms are also possible Saturday afternoon and evening west of a Jackson-to-Wamsutter line, with isolated showers developing again Sunday. Conditions will turn drier and warmer early next week before another round of rain and storm chances builds Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Drivers may encounter reduced visibility from smoke on I-80 near Rock Springs and I-25 around Casper, while hikers in the Wind River and Absaroka ranges should prepare for sudden lightning storms. Officials urge residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity and keep medications and air filters on hand through Sunday.
More weather alerts could follow early next week as precipitation chances expand across Wyoming.
