Cheyenne, Wyo. – A volatile weather setup could trigger severe thunderstorms across southeast Wyoming this afternoon, with conditions most dangerous between 2 and 8 p.m. Sunday. Areas near Cheyenne and Torrington face the highest risk, where large hail, damaging winds over 60 mph, and isolated tornadoes may develop.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the threat depends on a cap of stable air eroding by mid-afternoon. If it breaks, there’s a 70% chance that severe storms will rapidly develop across the region. The greatest impacts are expected along the I-25 and U.S. 85 corridors, including towns like Pine Bluffs, Lusk, and Wheatland.

The Enhanced Risk area includes eastern Laramie County and much of Goshen County. Residents are urged to remain weather-aware, especially those traveling or working outdoors. Have a way to receive warnings, charge mobile devices, and seek shelter quickly if alerts are issued.

Storms may intensify quickly, producing hail up to 2 inches in diameter and dangerous wind gusts. Isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

Warnings may be issued rapidly this afternoon. Stay tuned to NWS Cheyenne and local alerts as conditions evolve.
