Riverton, Wyo. – Critical fire weather will grip much of Wyoming through Thursday evening, with the National Weather Service extending a Red Flag Warning for 12 counties including Fremont, Natrona, Sweetwater, Teton, Uinta, Lincoln, Sublette, Park, and Hot Springs. The warning, in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, covers Yellowstone National Park, the Absaroka and Wind River Mountains, and the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
According to the NWS Riverton office, west winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, combined with humidity levels as low as 11% in some areas, will create conditions ripe for rapid wildfire spread. Afternoon highs will range from the mid-70s in higher elevations to the mid-90s in lower basins, adding to the danger.
Officials urge residents and visitors to avoid any outdoor burning, secure trailer chains to prevent sparks, and avoid activities that could ignite dry fuels. Backcountry travelers are advised to carry extra water and be ready to evacuate if fires ignite nearby.
Fire danger is expected to remain elevated into the weekend, with additional advisories possible if hot, dry, and windy weather continues.
