Cheyenne, WY – Drivers across southeastern Wyoming should prepare for powerful wind gusts late Thursday night through Friday afternoon, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cheyenne has issued a High Wind Warning for multiple counties and mountain foothill regions.

According to the NWS, west winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected beginning overnight and continuing through 3 p.m. MDT Friday. The strongest winds are forecast along the Interstate 80 corridor between Cheyenne and Laramie, including the Summit, as well as near Arlington, Elk Mountain, Bordeaux, and parts of Platte County.

The agency warns that high-profile vehicles, such as semi-trucks, campers, and trailers, face an increased risk of being blown off course due to intense crosswinds. “Strong crosswinds will be hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles,” the NWS stated in its alert Thursday afternoon.

Wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph may also cause minor property damage and make outdoor activities hazardous. Motorists are urged to delay travel or use extra caution when driving through open and elevated areas overnight and early Friday.

The warning remains in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday to 3 p.m. Friday, covering portions of Albany, Laramie, and Platte counties.
