Casper, Wyoming – Drivers and residents across central and southern Wyoming should prepare for strong wind gusts topping 50 mph Friday evening as storms push through the region. Areas like Casper, Riverton, and Rock Springs could experience sudden outflow winds from developing thunderstorms, posing a threat to high-profile vehicles and outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, scattered high-based showers and thunderstorms will continue across Johnson, Natrona, Fremont, Sweetwater, Sublette, and southern Lincoln counties through 8 p.m. Friday. These cells may produce outflow wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph, with isolated peaks near 55 mph.
The Bighorn Basin, Lander Foothills, and Green Mountains region are also under the advisory, especially in lower elevation zones. Blowing dust, unsecured outdoor items, and sudden visibility drops may occur near storm cores.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during active storm periods and secure loose property. Those towing trailers or driving large vehicles should use extreme caution on highways like I-25 and I-80 during gusty conditions.
Winds are expected to ease Friday night, but isolated showers could persist into early Saturday.
