Cheyenne, Wyo. – Large swaths of central and southern Wyoming face extreme fire danger Friday as gusty winds and single-digit humidity levels prompt Red Flag Warnings through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne and Riverton, Red Flag Warnings remain in effect until 6 p.m. for Carbon County and surrounding zones including the Upper North Platte River Basin, and until 9 p.m. for Natrona County, including Casper BLM lands. Winds will gust up to 35 mph with humidity levels plunging below 10%, making fire ignition and rapid spread highly likely.
The highest threat is centered in Carbon County, especially around the Shirley and Seminoe Mountains. Casper and surrounding Natrona County will also face critical fire weather conditions Friday afternoon as temperatures reach the mid-90s.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to secure fire-prone materials, avoid using machinery that generates sparks, and report any signs of smoke immediately. Any fires that do start may grow quickly and become difficult to contain.
The warnings are expected to expire by Friday night, but elevated fire risk could return this weekend if dry and windy conditions persist.
