Riverton, Wyo. – Dangerous fire weather conditions are intensifying across central and southwestern Wyoming as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. for Fremont and Natrona counties, with critical fire risk expected to persist into early Friday evening. Winds up to 30 mph and humidity dipping to just 9% could trigger rapid fire growth.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, the current Red Flag Warning covers Fire Weather Zones 280 and 283 and is driven by hot, dry, and breezy conditions. Afternoon highs will climb into the mid-90s, with Thursday expected to be the peak day for fire weather activity.
In Riverton, Lander, and Casper, winds will range from 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts through the week. The combination of low relative humidity, dried fuels, and above-normal temperatures will continue to elevate fire danger, especially during afternoon hours. Residents are urged to avoid open flames, secure trailer chains, and delay outdoor work involving sparks or heat.
The National Weather Service warns that additional Red Flag Warnings may be issued if winds strengthen or humidity drops further.
