Riverton, WY – Fires could quickly spiral out of control across central and western Wyoming through Saturday evening as strong winds and critically dry air intensify across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday for a wide stretch of the state, including Fremont, Natrona, Sweetwater, Park, and Johnson counties. Humidity levels will fall between 8 and 14 percent while temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s. Winds will strengthen significantly Saturday, with widespread gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph.
Conditions are especially volatile in the Bighorn Basin, Wind River Basin, and near Casper, where west to southwest winds will intensify through the afternoon. In Sweetwater County and near Rock Springs, gusts up to 40 mph will combine with extremely dry fuels, increasing the risk of fast-moving grass and brush fires.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged statewide. Residents should avoid using equipment that produces sparks and secure tow chains to prevent roadside ignitions. Fire crews warn that any ignition could become uncontrollable within minutes under these conditions.
Winds will ease and humidity will recover overnight Saturday, bringing some improvement. However, fire risk remains elevated until the warning expires, and additional advisories may be issued if dry conditions persist.
