Atlantic City, WY – A magnitude 3.8 earthquake was recorded Friday evening approximately 28 kilometers east of Atlantic City, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
According to USGS officials, the quake occurred at 5:38 p.m. MST at a depth of 11.5 km, and was centered in a remote portion of Fremont County, southeast of Lander and west of Rawlins. Early “Did You Feel It?” responses indicate light shaking across nearby rural areas, though no damage or injuries have been reported.
The USGS ShakeMap shows the strongest shaking confined to areas immediately surrounding the epicenter. Residents from communities near Lander, Atlantic City, Jeffrey City, and other sparsely populated stretches of central Wyoming submitted mild intensity reports, generally rating the shaking as IV (Light).
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in Wyoming, where subsurface faulting and historical seismicity occur regularly across the central and western parts of the state. USGS data shows no significant aftershocks so far, though monitoring will continue through the night.
Officials noted that quakes below magnitude 4.0 typically do not cause structural damage, but can be felt by residents near the epicenter depending on depth and local geology.
USGS encourages anyone who felt the event to submit a report through the “Did You Feel It?” system, which helps refine intensity mapping for future seismic analysis.
