Hunt Mountain, WY – Wyoming Highway Patrol is urging motorists to use extra caution this week after multiple cattle were struck on Highway 14A in the Hunt Mountain area. According to the agency, a pickup truck hit two cows Tuesday morning. Both animals were killed, though the driver declined medical treatment from EMS at the scene.
The incidents come as ranchers begin moving livestock off the mountain for the season, a process that often leaves some cattle wandering in open range areas. Patrol officials say the colder weather can also drive animals closer to roadways, increasing the risk of collisions—especially at dawn or dusk when visibility is limited.
“Open range areas are part of Wyoming life,” the patrol noted, reminding motorists that ranchers work hard to round up their cattle, but strays can still pose hazards similar to wild animals. Drivers are encouraged to slow down in marked “Open Range” or “Loose Stock” zones, keep headlights on in low visibility, and remain alert for livestock near the roadway.
Wyoming Highway Patrol advises all travelers to stay vigilant through the coming weeks as ranching operations continue across northern Wyoming.
