Cheyenne, WY – Residents across southeastern Wyoming, northern Colorado and western Nebraska are being urged to stay alert this afternoon as the National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch effective until 9 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch—designated as Severe Thunderstorm Watch 563—was issued at 3 p.m. MDT Thursday and includes key counties across the tri-state area. In Wyoming, the counties affected are Albany, Goshen, Laramie and Platte. In Colorado, the impacted counties are Larimer, Morgan and Weld. Nebraska counties under the watch include Banner, Kimball and Scotts Bluff.
The watch signifies that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning. Emergency officials are advising residents in these areas to monitor local alerts and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions through the evening hours.
The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne and surrounding regional forecast offices are closely monitoring radar and atmospheric trends, especially along the Front Range and High Plains where storms have the potential to intensify.
Travelers and outdoor workers are advised to seek shelter immediately if thunder is heard and to avoid open areas where lightning poses an elevated risk. The watch is set to expire at 9 p.m., but updates or extensions may be issued depending on storm development.
