Woodburn, OR – Deputies in Marion County rescued a German Shepherd trapped in floodwaters Saturday after reports that the animal had been left behind during an evacuation on Molalla Road NE.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, responders found the dog, named Bruno, partially submerged in cold floodwater inside a fenced area at a flooded property on December 21, 2025. Deputies safely removed the animal and transported him to an emergency veterinary clinic for evaluation before he was taken to the Marion County Dog Shelter.

Following an investigation, authorities arrested Fidenico Cruz Hernandez on December 22, 2025, charging him with Animal Abandonment and Second-Degree Animal Neglect. The suspect was booked into the Marion County Jail.

Officials said Bruno is now safe and recovering. The sheriff’s office used the incident to remind residents to include pets in emergency evacuation plans during severe weather events.

Recent storms across Marion County have led to multiple flooding reports, prompting safety warnings for both residents and animals.

“This is a reminder to never leave pets behind when evacuating,” deputies said in a post.
