Milwaukee, WI – Wisconsin has experienced a record-breaking year for tornadoes, with the state tallying 40 twisters so far in 2024. This figure significantly surpasses the average annual count of 23 tornadoes. The latest tornado, an EF-0, touched down near Medford in Taylor County last Friday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, this year’s tornado activity is notably higher than usual. Most tornadoes have been categorized as EF-1, with 26 occurrences, while there have been 11 EF-0 tornadoes and three EF-2 tornadoes. The month of May was particularly active, contributing to the bulk of the tornadoes with 22 occurrences, followed by 15 in June.
The National Weather Service advises Wisconsin residents to stay alert as the tornado season progresses. Historically, tornado activity can continue into late summer, and additional storms could develop. Residents are urged to review their safety plans and ensure they have access to up-to-date weather information.
