Wisconsin – Light flakes drift across the Mississippi River this morning, streaking sideways in gusty winds and coating roadways just enough to cause trouble. Pavement looks merely wet at first glance, but slick spots are already developing as snow showers continue through the day.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, additional snow showers are expected today and tonight, bringing a trace to around one inch of accumulation. Northwest wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph may lead to periods of blowing snow, especially west of the Mississippi River, with visibility briefly dropping below one mile.
In La Crosse, Onalaska, and Holmen, drivers on U.S. 14, Highway 16, and I-90 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Blowing snow can quickly reduce visibility, while untreated bridges and ramps may ice over as temperatures slide through the 20s. Plan extra time if traveling and slow down when snow intensifies.
Snow chances linger into Saturday, though accumulations remain light. Even small amounts can keep roads slick when paired with cold pavement and steady wind. Saturday night turns sharply colder, with lows near zero and wind chills dipping below zero.
Sunday brings another round of snow showers, especially north of I-90, followed by a reinforcing blast of Arctic air. By Sunday night into early Monday, wind chills may fall between 20 and 30 degrees below zero across the region.
MLK Day Monday looks dry but bitterly cold. Highs struggle near 4 degrees, and exposure risks increase quickly. Dress in layers, limit outdoor time, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Winter remains firmly in control as January deepens. Seeing blowing snow or slick roads near you? Share what conditions look like across the Coulee Region.
