La Crosse, WI – Wisconsin’s calm start to the week will quickly turn treacherous as a Winter Storm Watch goes into effect for Taylor and Clark Counties beginning Tuesday afternoon through late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service in La Crosse warns of heavy snow, with 4–6 inches possible and bursts up to one inch per hour during the Tuesday evening commute.
The first flakes are expected to arrive Tuesday afternoon, spreading quickly across north-central Wisconsin. As temperatures hover near freezing, roads could turn slick fast — especially on Highway 29 and U.S. 10, where visibility may drop sharply in heavier snow bands. Meteorologists note the snow may come in intense bursts, briefly reducing visibility to near zero for drivers.
By Tuesday night, accumulations will build steadily, coating much of the region under a fresh, wet snowpack. Winds may increase slightly, causing blowing snow in open stretches and making travel more difficult for evening commuters and early Wednesday travelers.
After midnight, the storm begins to pull east, with lingering light snow into early Wednesday. Skies will gradually clear by afternoon, but temperatures remain cold — highs near 28°F and lows in the upper teens — setting up for possible refreeze conditions on untreated surfaces.
Looking ahead, late-week patterns hint at lake-effect snow for northern Wisconsin and another Arctic front dropping south by Dec. 11–17, reinforcing winter’s grip across the Great Lakes.
