Milwaukee, WI – A strengthening winter storm system is set to blanket southern Wisconsin late Friday night, bringing heavy snow and treacherous travel from Madison to Milwaukee through late Saturday night. Forecasters say totals could exceed 6 inches where the heaviest bands persist.
According to the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan office, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for much of south-central and southeast Wisconsin, including Dane, Jefferson, Waukesha, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties. Snow is expected to begin after midnight Friday, intensifying through Saturday morning. Forecasters warn that colder air will allow snow to accumulate rapidly on untreated surfaces, especially along I-94, I-39/90, and Highway 18.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation advises drivers to expect rapidly changing pavement conditions Saturday morning as heavy snow reduces visibility and creates slick stretches from Janesville to the lakeshore. Plow crews are preparing for difficult operations during peak snowfall, when roads may quickly re-cover after clearing.
Emergency officials urge residents to prepare now—charge devices, pack vehicle kits, and plan alternate travel times. Those attending weekend events should consider traveling earlier Friday or later Sunday to avoid the storm’s worst impact. Motorists who must drive Saturday should reduce speed, maintain extra following distance, and watch for drifting in open areas across Rock, Green, and Lafayette counties.
