Milwaukee, WI – A fast-moving winter storm is set to create hazardous travel conditions across southern and central Wisconsin Sunday evening into Monday morning, as rain quickly transitions to snow and temperatures fall sharply.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, rain will change to snow between 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by increasing snowfall and strengthening northwest winds through the night. Forecasters warn that wet and untreated roads will freeze quickly, leading to icy conditions even before snow accumulation peaks.

Snowfall totals are expected to vary by location. Areas north of a line from Dodgeville to Sheboygan could see 2 to 5 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts near 6 inches possible, especially toward central Wisconsin. Southeast Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha, is expected to see lighter totals of 1 to 3 inches, though impacts may still be significant due to ice and wind.

Snowfall rates may reach one-half inch per hour overnight, especially between 10 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, while wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph could cause blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility. Temperatures will drop rapidly into the teens overnight, increasing the risk of flash-freezing on roadways.

The National Weather Service says the Monday morning commute will be hazardous, with snow-covered and icy roads across much of the region. Snow is expected to taper off late Monday morning into the early afternoon, but brisk winds and slick travel conditions may linger.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of southern and central Wisconsin, with some northern counties upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning due to higher snow totals and stronger winds.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, slow down if driving, and monitor weather.gov and local alerts for updates as conditions evolve.
