La Crosse, WI – Heavy snow and strong winds continue to impact southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin, making travel hazardous through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, widespread moderate to heavy wet snow will persist until approximately 7 p.m. CDT before tapering off from west to east. Additional snow accumulations of up to five inches are expected, particularly in La Crosse and Houston counties, where snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour have been observed. Visibility has been reduced to a quarter mile at times in the heaviest bands of snow.
In addition to accumulating snow, strong north winds are gusting between 35 and 55 mph, creating near-whiteout conditions, especially in southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds has led to snow-covered and slick roads, increasing the risk of accidents during the evening commute.
Travelers are urged to check road conditions before heading out. In Minnesota, updates are available at 511mn.org, and in Wisconsin, travelers can visit 511wi.gov. Those who must drive should carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water in case of travel disruptions.
Authorities advise extreme caution as conditions remain hazardous until the storm moves out later tonight.
