Ashland, WI – Northern Wisconsin is bracing for dangerous winter weather through the weekend, with freezing rain overnight giving way to heavy snow and ice accumulations beginning Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday for Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron, and Price counties. Ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch and light snow are expected early Saturday, with winds gusting up to 35 mph.

A Winter Storm Watch follows from 7 p.m. Saturday through 7 p.m. Sunday, with potential for 5 to 7 inches of snow in northern Bayfield County and up to 0.3 inches of ice in Iron and Price counties. Wind gusts up to 35 mph could lead to tree damage and power outages.

Residents in Hurley, Washburn, Phillips, and Superior are advised to avoid travel if possible during the storm window. Slippery road conditions are likely, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Drivers should check 511wi.gov for updated road conditions and carry emergency supplies. Prepare for extended power outages and hazardous travel through Sunday evening.
