Green Bay, Wis. – Strong south to southwest winds are sweeping across Wisconsin today, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph and creating dangerous travel and power disruption risks, especially through late Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, sustained winds will climb to 20–30 mph this morning, peaking in the afternoon with gusts of 35–45 mph across much of the state. Wind gusts topping 40 mph are expected in cities like Appleton, Waupaca, and Wisconsin Rapids between 1 and 4 p.m.
Tree limbs may snap and fall onto powerlines, and storm clean-up efforts could be delayed. The wind threat is particularly hazardous for high-profile vehicles traveling on east-west routes like Highway 29 and U.S. 10, where crosswinds could make driving treacherous.
Residents in Green Bay, Oshkosh, and Stevens Point should secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak gust window. Utility crews are on alert for scattered outages as conditions worsen throughout the day.
Winds are expected to gradually taper off after 8 p.m., but localized impacts may linger into the night. Additional alerts may be issued if conditions intensify.
