Drivers across Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin should prepare for hazardous travel conditions later today as a flash freeze develops during the evening commute. According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, temperatures will fall rapidly behind an Arctic cold front, causing any standing water on roads to quickly turn to ice.
Light to moderate snow showers are still possible this afternoon and evening, although the threat for intense snow squalls has decreased as forecast models trend drier. Even so, brief snow showers combined with falling temperatures may reduce visibility at times and contribute to slick conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Gusty winds will play a major role in worsening conditions. Southwest winds are expected to shift west and then northwest this evening, ushering in much colder air. These winds will help accelerate the temperature drop, increasing the likelihood of a flash freeze during peak travel hours. While snow accumulations are expected to remain under one inch, the rapid freeze is the primary concern rather than snowfall totals.
The most dangerous travel window is expected between late afternoon and mid-evening, when temperatures plunge below freezing across the region. Any puddles, slush, or melted snow from earlier rainfall or daytime warmth will refreeze quickly, creating black ice that can be difficult to see.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra time for travel, and remain alert for sudden changes in road conditions. Even roads that appear wet may turn icy within minutes as temperatures drop. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and parking lots, which may become slick as well.
Conditions will remain cold overnight, with icy spots lingering into early Friday morning. Stay tuned to local weather updates and take precautions if traveling later today or tonight.
