Wisconsin – Bitter air stings exposed skin this morning as Arctic cold tightens its grip across northern Wisconsin, setting the stage for a dangerous wind chill weekend.
A Cold Weather Advisory is now in effect for portions of far north-central and far northeast Wisconsin, with timing varying by location. According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, areas including Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, and Iron counties face the coldest conditions, with advisories lasting until 6 a.m. Sunday in the far northeast and until 10 a.m. Sunday elsewhere. Door County is excluded from the advisory.
Wind chills drop well below zero at times, especially during the late-night and early-morning hours. Readings near 10 to 25 degrees below zero are possible, enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Northwest winds off Lake Superior will increase cloud cover later tonight, slightly modifying the Arctic air mass but not enough to remove the cold risk.
Travelers across northern highways such as U.S. 51, Highway 141, and Highway 8 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Vehicles may struggle to start, and emergency response times can lengthen in extreme cold. Anyone traveling should keep winter survival kits in vehicles, including blankets, food, and fully charged phones.
Outdoor plans should be limited. Dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors. Check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat. Even brief outdoor exposure can become dangerous after sunset.
The cold begins to ease slowly later Sunday as winds relax and temperatures inch upward. By Monday, highs recover into the upper teens and 20s, still cold but less extreme. A more noticeable moderation arrives midweek, offering relief after a harsh December reminder of winter’s power.
