Superior, WI – Blustery winds and lingering snow showers are set to keep travel slick across northwest Wisconsin through late tonight, following the downgrade of earlier blizzard and winter storm warnings. While the most extreme conditions have eased, quick reductions in visibility and drifting snow remain concerns for the Wednesday evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight for Douglas, Sawyer, and Price Counties. Forecasters report up to one inch of additional snow in Douglas County and up to two inches in Price and Sawyer Counties. According to meteorologists, winds will gust 35 to 40 mph, pushing snow back across US-2, US-53, and local county routes. According to Wisconsin DOT, isolated stretches may become briefly snow-covered as winds lift powder onto treated roadways.
Blowing and drifting will be most noticeable in open terrain, including the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation and rural corridors south of Hayward and Phillips. Drivers should expect fast-changing visibility, especially during the early-evening peak travel window.
Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use headlights in areas of blowing snow. Keep phones charged and check 511 for updated road impacts before traveling tonight. Conditions will gradually improve after midnight as winds diminish and snow tapers.
