Ashland, WI – Blizzard conditions are gradually easing across far northern Wisconsin early this morning after a night of heavy snow and wind-driven whiteouts that made travel extremely dangerous. Some additional accumulation remains possible before daybreak as gusty winds continue to loft powder across open stretches.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. for Ashland and Iron Counties, including the Bad River Reservation, the northwestern Lac du Flambeau Band lands, and Madeline Island. Forecasters report up to three more inches of snow overnight. According to meteorologists, winds gusting near 35 mph are keeping roads slick and visibility limited on US-2 and rural routes near Hurley and Odanah. According to Wisconsin DOT, plow operations continue but blowing snow may partially refill cleared lanes until winds ease.
Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. Drifting is most severe across open farmland and exposed stretches near the lakeshore. If you must drive, officials urge you to carry a winter survival kit, keep headlights on, and remain with your vehicle if stranded.
Conditions improve later this morning as winds slowly diminish, though isolated slick patches may persist into midday.
