La Crosse, Wisconsin – Drivers across western Wisconsin could lose visibility within seconds as blizzard conditions rapidly spread across the region, already leaving many roads snow-covered or impassable Sunday afternoon.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the National Weather Service in La Crosse, travel is not advised across much of northern and western Wisconsin as strong winds whip heavy snow across highways. Road condition maps released at 2:30 p.m. Sunday show widespread snow-covered roads from La Crosse through the Wisconsin Dells and across parts of west-central Wisconsin.
Communities including La Crosse, Black River Falls, Wisconsin Dells, and Arcadia are seeing the worst conditions as winds increase toward 40 to 55 mph. These winds are blowing already deep snow across highways, creating sudden whiteouts along Interstate 90 and surrounding rural roads.
Transportation officials warn that conditions will likely deteriorate farther south toward Madison and central Wisconsin as the storm progresses. Many northern counties are already reporting impassable stretches of roadway due to heavy drifting snow.
Emergency officials urge residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. Anyone who must drive should carry winter survival supplies including blankets, water, and a charged phone in case they become stranded.
Blizzard conditions are expected to persist overnight into Monday morning as winds remain strong and additional snow bands move through the region. Travel disruptions could continue well into the Monday commute.
