MADISON, WI — Snow shovels and salt trucks are about to get their first serious workout of the season. The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a Winter Storm Watch for southern and southeastern Wisconsin, including Madison, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Janesville, and Kenosha, from late Friday night through late Saturday night.
Forecasters warn that heavy snow is likely across much of the region, with totals exceeding 6 inches in some areas. Travel could become very difficult, especially along major routes such as I-94, I-39, and Highway 12. The storm’s timing — arriving during one of the busiest post-Thanksgiving travel weekends — could lead to significant delays on both roadways and runways.
Snow is expected to begin late Friday night and continue steadily through Saturday, possibly mixing with sleet in far southeastern counties. Winds may gust up to 25 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility across open areas. By Saturday evening, the snow may transition to lighter flurries before tapering off Sunday morning.
Behind the storm, temperatures will tumble into the upper 20s and low 30s, ushering in a classic early-December chill. Forecasters note this system may mark the start of a colder, snowier pattern lasting into next week.
Residents are urged to finish holiday travel by Friday afternoon, keep vehicles winter-ready, and check local advisories before heading out Saturday.
