La Crosse, WI – A new Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of southeast Minnesota and central and west-central Wisconsin, where a developing rain-to-snow system is expected to create slippery travel conditions early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

According to the NWS La Crosse office, rain will move into the region Monday evening before transitioning to a rain-and-snow mix overnight. Forecasters expect the precipitation to become mostly snow by daybreak Tuesday, with snowfall rates near 0.5 inches per hour. Those higher rates could allow snow to accumulate on less-traveled roads, bridges, and other elevated surfaces.

The advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to noon Tuesday for Wabasha County in Minnesota and the Wisconsin counties of Buffalo, Trempealeau, Jackson, Monroe, Juneau, Adams, and Clark. Cities included are Wabasha, Alma, Arcadia, Black River Falls, Sparta, Tomah, Mauston, Friendship, Whitehall, and Neillsville.

Forecasters expect 1 to 4 inches of wet snow, with the higher totals more likely in areas that see sustained heavier snow bursts. While main roads may initially remain wet, conditions could deteriorate rapidly during the morning commute as temperatures hover near the freezing mark and snow intensity increases.

Drivers are advised to slow down, allow for additional travel time, and monitor local road conditions. Minnesota residents can check 511mn.org, while Wisconsin travelers should visit 511wi.gov for updated information.

The NWS says additional updates may be issued overnight as forecasters monitor how quickly precipitation transitions to snow across the region.
