Madison, WI – Wisconsin residents are preparing for a significant winter storm this weekend, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of a prolonged snowfall event capable of dropping 8 inches or more across much of southern Wisconsin. The highest impacts are expected Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening as snowfall rates increase.
According to the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan office, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 12 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, covering Dane, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Jefferson, Walworth, Racine, Kenosha, and surrounding counties. Forecasters note a 65–80% probability of 8 inches or more, with the potential for lake enhancement increasing totals along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The storm is expected to unfold in phases. According to NWS forecasters, light snow begins early Saturday morning, with rates increasing through midday. The greatest impact window runs from Saturday afternoon into late evening, when snowfall rates may reach up to 0.75 inches per hour. A southward shift in the storm track overnight has increased uncertainty regarding exact totals, particularly near the lakeshore.
Today’s conditions will also challenge holiday travelers. NWS reports elevated winds and wind chills across the region, with gusts between 25–40 mph and wind chills dipping into the teens. Cold, breezy weather will persist through Thanksgiving parades and Friday morning events.
Winter travel impacts are likely throughout the storm, especially on Saturday. Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts as forecasters continue refining snowfall projections into the weekend.
