Wisconsin’s cold sinks deep before sunrise, stiffening breath and biting exposed skin.
Streetlights glow over quiet roads in Green Bay as engines strain and frost coats windshields. This is not routine winter cold. It is the kind that turns minutes outdoors into a medical risk.
An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across northeast Wisconsin, including Green Bay, De Pere, Ashwaubenon, and surrounding communities. Wind chills have dropped between 25 and 45 degrees below zero, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, the most dangerous cold holds through the morning hours before slowly easing later today. Actual air temperatures hover near −15 degrees, but light winds push the “feels-like” numbers far lower.
Road conditions stay mostly dry, yet the cold creates its own hazards. Vehicles struggle to start. Batteries weaken fast. Any moisture on pavement freezes instantly, especially on bridges and ramps along I-41 and Highway 172. Limit travel if possible and keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.
Relief comes slowly. Highs climb only into the single digits today and Sunday. Wind chills remain below zero at times, especially overnight. By Monday, sunshine returns with highs near 8 degrees, still cold but less dangerous.
Midweek brings a gradual moderation. Highs reach the low teens Tuesday and push toward the mid-teens Wednesday. Even then, nighttime lows remain near or below zero, keeping winter firmly in control.
Looking ahead, long-range outlooks suggest below-normal temperatures persist late next week across Wisconsin, even as storm chances remain limited.
Dress in layers. Cover all exposed skin. Check on neighbors and pets. How cold did it feel where you stepped outside today?
