Wisconsin – A cold gray sky hangs over the Mississippi River Valley this morning as light drizzle and snowflakes begin mixing in around La Crosse. Wet pavement glistens along city streets, and forecasters warn conditions could turn slippery as temperatures hover near freezing.
Meteorologists say a mix of drizzle, freezing drizzle, and light snow is moving across southwest Wisconsin and nearby parts of Minnesota and Iowa. The early-day combination may create slick patches on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
Drivers traveling through the I-90 corridor near La Crosse should watch for rapidly changing road conditions. Even a thin glaze of ice can develop when temperatures sit near 32°F, especially on elevated roadways and rural routes.
As the system continues east, precipitation will transition mainly to light snow later in the day. Accumulations are expected to stay relatively minor, generally around 1 to 2 inches in parts of the region. Still, the mix of moisture and cold pavement may create pockets of slushy travel through the morning.
Once the system moves out, colder air settles into western Wisconsin. Skies gradually clear tonight, allowing temperatures to fall into the mid-20s, which could refreeze moisture left on roads.
Sunshine returns briefly Thursday with highs near 45°F across La Crosse and the surrounding Coulee Region. However, another weather shift is already developing.
By Friday, March 13, breezy weather spreads across the Upper Mississippi Valley. Temperatures cool slightly with highs near 40°F, and scattered snow showers remain possible.
Looking toward the weekend, meteorologists are tracking another system that could bring additional accumulating snow Saturday night into Sunday somewhere across the region.
March often delivers these quick weather swings across Wisconsin as winter slowly loosens its grip while spring inches closer.
