Wisconsin’s winter tightens its grip today as thin ice quietly coats roads and sidewalks.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across north-central and northeast Wisconsin, including Green Bay, as light snow and a glazing of ice develop through the afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, ice accumulation and light snow totals under one inch are enough to create hazardous travel conditions. Temperatures hover in the upper 20s, allowing moisture to freeze on contact. Roads may look wet at first, then suddenly turn slick.
Drivers should expect the most trouble late this afternoon through tonight, especially on untreated streets, bridges, and entrance ramps. Slushy patches may refreeze quickly after sunset. Slow down and increase following distance. Even short trips could take longer than expected.
Winds stay light, which limits blowing snow but allows ice to linger. Visibility remains generally good, making conditions deceptively dangerous. Pedestrians should watch for icy sidewalks and parking lots, where falls become more likely.
Conditions improve gradually Tuesday. Skies clear and highs climb toward the mid-30s, helping melt leftover ice during the day. Tuesday night turns colder again, with lows near 20 degrees, allowing any remaining moisture to refreeze.
Midweek brings quieter winter weather. Wednesday stays mostly sunny with highs near 31 degrees, followed by cooler nights. Another system may approach later in the week, bringing renewed snow chances by Thursday night into the weekend.
Looking ahead to the 6–10 day outlook, temperatures trend slightly above normal for mid-February. While deep winter cold eases, Wisconsin remains in a freeze-thaw pattern. That means fewer major storms, but more refreeze risks after mild afternoons.
For now, plan carefully. Allow extra travel time today and tonight, and assume any shiny surface could be ice.
