Milwaukee, WI – Wisconsin roads glisten this morning under low clouds, with mist hanging in the air and visibility fading in pockets. The calm look is deceiving. Subtle changes today set the stage for a more wintry turn as weekend travel ramps up.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, patchy fog and drizzle continue across eastern and southern Wisconsin, with a low chance for brief freezing drizzle north of Madison later today. Surface temperatures hover in the mid-30s, just cold enough to create slick spots on untreated roads and sidewalks.

Travel improves slightly Saturday, though skies stay gray and damp. By Saturday night, rain chances increase across Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, and Kenosha. Wet pavement becomes widespread, especially along I-94 and I-43, as holiday travelers move through southeast Wisconsin.

Conditions change quickly Sunday. Rain becomes more persistent, then begins mixing with snow as colder air presses in. Gusty northwest winds develop Sunday night, pulling temperatures into the 20s. Any leftover moisture may freeze, creating black ice concerns into early Monday. Drivers should slow down and expect rapidly changing road conditions after sunset.

Monday stays blustery and cold, with scattered snow showers possible and highs struggling to reach the upper 20s. Even light snow could reduce visibility at times, especially in open areas. Crews may need to treat roads again as winter tightens its grip heading into New Year’s week.

Looking toward New Year’s Eve on Wednesday, colder air remains in place. Another light snow chance cannot be ruled out, keeping winter travel planning front and center as 2026 approaches.
